YAŞAYAN EFSANE AVO UVEZIAN

   Hep ilkler özel olur derler ya. Bu nedenle, blog sayfamın ilk yazısına, kendisini tanımakla şeref duyduğum  yaşayan bir puro efsanesinden bahsetmek istiyorum. Davidoff’un daveti nedeni ile Dominik Cumhuriyeti seyehatimde tanışma fırsatını yakaladığım yaşan puro efsanesi Avo Uvezian’ı anlatmak başlı başlına bir heyecan kaynağı diyebilirim. Yazısına daha sonra yer vereceğim Davidoff ziyaretini o zamanki orta-doğu ürün müdürü Jean Philip’in davetiyle Dominik Cumhuriyetinde bulunmuştum. Santa Domingo’ya vardığımızda herzaman benim için sıkıcı olan, otel giriş işlemlerini yaptırıyordum ki lobinin bir köşesinde seyehat arkadaşımın şık giyimli, koca şapkalı bir kişiyle sohbet ettiğini gördüm.  Sohbetleri oldukça samimi ve neşeli görünüyordu, seyahat arkadaşım heralde tanıdığı birine rastladı diye tahminde bulunurken ve dünya gerçektende ufakmış diye düşünmeden kendimi alamadım. Sıkıcı otel giriş işlemleri sonrası, kendilerinin yanlarına gittiğimde Türkçe  olarak “aman efendim hoşgeldiniz, nasılsınız” karşılaması karşısında şok oldum diyebilirim. Dünyanın öteki ucunda bile Türkçe birşeyler duymak, evet evet biz Türkler heryerdeyiz havasındayken karşımdaki kişinin yaşayan puro efsanelerinden Avo Uvezian olduğunu öğrendiğim andan itibaren mütevazi dünyama acil bir dönüş yaptım. Yıllardan beri purolarını sattığım, puroları hakkında eğitim verdiğim üstad ile karşı karşıyaydım. Peki bu kadar övgü ile anlattığım, onunla tanışmanın bu kadar şeref verdiği Avo Uvezian kimdir?

   Ermeni asıllı olan Avo Uvezian 1926 Beyrut doğumludur. Müzisyen bir ailenin çocuğu olan Uvezian’ın annesi vokalist, babası besteci ve senfoni orkestra şefiymiş. Piyano çalmaya çocuk yaşta başlayan Uvezian gençlik yıllarını üç arkadaşı ile beraber kurdukları “Lüblanlı Gençler” adlı grup ile Beyrutta sahne almaya başlamışlar. Sonradan Bağdat’ta grubu ile sahne almışlar. Ancak hayalindeki gibi bir yaşamı burada sürdüremeyeceğini anlayınca bu sefer rotayı Tahran’a çevirmişler. Tahran’ın en lüks otelinde sahne alan “Lübnanlı Gençler” kısa sürede şöhreti yakalmış. Hatta bu ünlerini  İran Lideri Şah Rıza Pehlevi’ye kadar ulaştırabilmişler. Jazz hayranı olduğu bilinen Şah Rıza Pehlevi kendisini kısa bir sürede özel piyanisti yapmıştır. Tahran’da geçirdiği iki yıl sonunda aile özlemi ile beyruta dönme planları yaparken, ortadoğunun karışması nedeni ve şahın ısrarıyla ABD yolunu tuttu. Uvezian birleşik devletlerde müzik hayatına devam ederken, burada tanışarak evlendiği eşinin ısrarı sonucu kuyum işine girişmiş. Hatta eşinin erkek kardeşi ile birlikte, kuyum işi için Porta Rikoya giderek yerleşmiştir. Uvezian 1970 yılında eşinden ayrılmış olsada mücevher işinden ayrılmadı. Gündüzleri fabrikada çalışan, akşamları ise değişik mekanlarda piyano çalan Uvezian, 1974 yılında tamamen müzik yapmaya başladı. 1975 yılında tekrar evlendi ve baba oldu. Çalıştığı ünlü eğlence merkezi Palmas del Mar da insanların, Küba devriminden sonra puroya ilgilerinin arttığını fark etti. Çoğu kişi dinlenmek ve eğlenmek için turist olarak Karayipler’e gelip, dönüşlerinde bolca puro alıyordu. Etrafında kendisinden puro isteyen, tanıdıklarınında sayısı az değildi. Bir gün kızının “Arkadaşın verdiğin puroyu beğenirse, tekrar isteyecektir. Bırak satın alsınlar” demesi ilham kaynağı olmuştur. Ceneverde yaşayan bir arkadaşının desteğiyle, Davidoff gibi ünlü markanın üretildiği fabrikanın sahibi Henrik Kelner ile tanıştı. 1987 yılında Bolero adını verdiği ilk pursonu San Juan da piyasaya sürdü. Daha sonra diğer puro devlerini izleyerek kendi ismiyle markalaştı. Gün geçtikçe, üretimini ve kalitesini arttıran Uvezian 1995 yılında Davidoff’un yeni sahibi olan İsviçreli Ottinger firmasına  sadece dağıtım hakkını 10 milyon dolara satışını yapmıştı.

Avo Uvezian’ın hayatı duymuş olduğum en başarılı ve etkileyici hikayelerden biri olmuştur.  Müzik onun hayatından hiç bir zaman silinmemiş. Ürettiği tüm purolarında, yapmış olduğu bestelerin notalarını görebilirsiniz. Bilmeyenler için söyleyeyim, bu efsane üstad aynı zamanda hala zevkle dinlenen Strangers in The Night’ın da bestecisidir.

O gün ve tüm gece yemeği boyunca Avo Uvezian ile  sohbet etmek harikaydı. En bombasıda herkese nasip olmayacak  “Strangers in The Night” ı  kendi piyanosu ve sesinden dinlemek olmuştur.

As they say, firsts are always special. For this reason, I would like to start the first post of my blog by talking about a living cigar legend whom I have the honour to know. I can say that telling about the living cigar legend Avo Uvezian, whom I had the opportunity to meet during my trip to the Dominican Republic due to Davidoff’s invitation, is a source of excitement in itself. I had travelled to the Dominican Republic with the invitation of Jean Philip, the then Middle-East product manager of Davidoff, which I will write about later. When we arrived in Santa Domingo, I was going through the hotel check-in process, which is always boring for me, when I saw my travelling companion chatting with a smartly dressed person with a big hat in a corner of the lobby. Their conversation seemed quite sincere and cheerful, and while I guessed that my travelling companion probably met someone he knew, I couldn’t help thinking that the world was really small. After the boring hotel check-in process, when I went to them, I was shocked by the greeting of “Oh, sir, welcome, how are you” in Turkish. While I was in the mood to hear something in Turkish even at the other end of the world, yes, yes, we Turks are everywhere, I made an urgent return to my humble world as soon as I learned that the person in front of me was Avo Uvezian, one of the living cigar legends. I was facing the master whose cigars I had been selling for years and giving training about cigars. So who is Avo Uvezian, whom I have told with such praise and whom it was such an honour to meet him?

Avo Uvezian, of Armenian origin, was born in Beirut in 1926. Born into a family of musicians, Uvezian’s mother was a vocalist and his father was a composer and symphony conductor. Uvezian started to play the piano at a young age and started to perform in Beirut with the group called “Lebanese Youth”, which he founded with three of his friends. Later, he performed with his band in Baghdad. However, when they realised that they could not live the life of their dreams here, they turned their route to Tehran. Performing in the most luxurious hotel of Tehran, “Lebanese Youth” became famous in a short time. They even managed to reach the Iranian leader Shah Reza Pahlavi. Shah Reza Pahlavi, who was known to be a jazz fan, made him his private pianist in a short time. At the end of the two years he spent in Tehran, while he was planning to return to Beyruta with family longing, he travelled to the USA due to the Middle East turmoil and the insistence of the Shah.While Uvezian was continuing his music life in the United States, he entered the jewellery business at the insistence of his wife, whom he met and married here. He even settled in Puerto Rico with his wife’s brother for jewellery business. Although Uvezian separated from his wife in 1970, he did not leave the jewellery business. Uvezian, who worked in the factory during the day and played the piano in different places in the evenings, started to make music completely in 1974. In 1975, he remarried and became a father. At Palmas del Mar, the famous entertainment centre where he worked, he noticed that people had become more interested in cigars after the Cuban revolution. Many people came to the Caribbean as tourists to relax and have fun, and they were buying cigars in abundance on their return. The number of acquaintances around him who asked him for cigars was not small. One day his daughter said, “If your friend likes the cigar you give him, he will ask for it again. Let them buy it” was a source of inspiration. With the support of a friend living in Geneva, he met Henrik Kelner, the owner of the factory where the famous brand Davidoff was produced. In 1987, he launched his first cigar called Bolero in San Juan. Then, following other cigar giants, it branded itself with its own name. Increasing its production and quality day by day, Uvezian sold only the distribution rights to the Swiss Ottinger company, the new owner of Davidoff, for 10 million dollars in 1995.

Avo Uvezian’s life has been one of the most successful and impressive stories I have ever heard. Music has never been erased from his life. You can see the notes of his compositions in all the cigars he produced. For those who don’t know, this legendary master is also the composer of Strangers in The Night, which is still listened to with pleasure.

It was great to chat with Avo Uvezian that day and during the whole dinner. The most amazing thing was to listen to “Strangers in The Night” with his own piano and voice.
